M5 junction 8 carriageway repairs

We have had the following message from National Highways:

We’ll be carrying out a permanent repair to the M5 southbound at junction 8 following the deterioration of the carriageway and the embankment at the side of the road.

Our work will start on 8 January, and we expect to complete by Summer 2024. Most of our work will be carried out under narrow lanes which have been designed to reduce the impact on the road user and travelling public.

A reduced speed limit along with speed enforcement will be in place throughout to protect both our workforce and road users.

To install our narrow lanes safely, the M5 southbound will be closed overnight between junction 7 and junction 9, from 8 January to 19 January, Monday to Friday. During this time, we’ll also close the M50 eastbound from junction 1, including M5 junction 8 northbound exit slip.

We’ll also be closing the M5 southbound at junction 8 overnight between the exit and entry slip roads, from 29 January to 2 February, Monday to Friday. This work is to remove the road surface from the hard shoulder and lane one.

During closures, we’ll install a full signed diversion (see below).

Diversion:

Before closures are in place, we’ll monitor traffic levels each night, and aim to have the road fully closed by 9pm, reopening at 6am each day.

Please plan ahead and allow additional time for your journey.

We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme; however unforeseen circumstances adverse weather conditions may mean changes.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout.
